What to Expect
Going to a new church for the first time can be a very intimidating thing. We get that. We hope this makes it easier for you.
Some of us wear tie-dye shirts and jeans, some of us wear suits and ties. Some of us wear dresses, some of us wear pajamas. Our Rector usually is wearing Birkenstocks, so don’t worry too much about your clothes. We all fit in.
When you arrive, there is plenty of parking in the lot behind the church, just turn at the stop light. There are a couple of spots close to the door reserved just for you. Enter at either door. Once inside, an usher will give you a bulletin that contains everything you need to follow the service. If you are attending an outdoor service, enter through the door next to the banner and turn left - the hallway will lead you to the West parking lot where we worship under the trees. If you forget to bring a lawn chair, no worries! Our usher will have one waiting for you.
There is no right or wrong way to worship. For example, at various points of the service, the bulletin asks people to stand or kneel—we want you to do whichever makes you feel most comfortable. Jesus was all about loving people, and we don't think Jesus cares whether you're standing or kneeling, what you're wearing, or if your kid makes a little bit of noise! In fact, our 9:15am service includes many children of all ages. So come and don't feel like your children need to sit perfectly still and be silent for an entire hour.
You will be invited to raise your hand during the announcements when our priest asks if there are newcomers. Don’t worry! You don’t have to talk or introduce yourself, we just want to give you a mug.
All three of our Sunday services, though very different, follow the same basic format: we gather together, sing hymns, hear readings from scripture, listen to a sermon, offer prayers to God on behalf of the world and the Church, and break bread together as we share communion. At St. Timothy's we invite all people to come to the altar to receive communion, regardless of where you are in your faith journey, regardless of denomination. Jesus didn't turn anyone away, and neither do we.
We hope that you'll join us for worship on a Sunday morning. We want you to feel comfortable and participate in the service as much or as little as you like. If you have any questions, just ask one of our greeters or introduce yourself to one of our priests. We hope to see you on Sunday!
